The BOSKAR © Rock Flaps System
An adjustable and removable rock and mud protection system for your offroad vehicle and towed trailer
What are BOSKAR © Rock Flaps?
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS are an adjustable and removable rock and mud protection system for your offroad vehicle and towed trailer.
Why use BOSKAR © Rock Flaps?
When traveling at any speed on rough roads, the rear of an offroad vehicle can be a very dynamic environment. Mud and rocks are ejected out from under the rear tyres and can cause damage to towed trailers, whether caravans, horse boxes, boats, or your prised off-road camper. Worst case, rocks can even deflect back from a towed trailer and break the rear window of your tow vehicle!
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS provide the ultimate protection for your tow vehicle and towed trailer. It is a heavy duty flap which deflects mud, rocks, debris and road tar without inhibiting your vehicle’s towing ability or departure angles.
If the rear of the tow vehicle or front of the towed trailer is not protected, ejected mud, rocks, debris and road tar can potentially cause damage to your expensive tow vehicle or trailer.
It does not detract from your vehicle’s stylish appearance but rather enhances the rugged appearance thereof. It works hard and looks good while doing it.
Save money and prevent damage to your tow vehicle and trailer. No more rock dents, chips, and scratches, or costly paint touch-ups or windscreen replacements. Get even more value by transferring BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS from vehicle to vehicle, ensuring protection for all your tow vehicles and trailers when you need it.
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS are recommended for any offroad vehicle, especially when towing on rocky or sandy gravel roads. Replacing windscreens or rock damage to your boat or off-road camper whilst travelling is expensive and depending on where you, maybe not even possible. It certainly can ruin your trip. BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS is your inexpensive protection mechanism to ensure the safety of your tow vehicle and towed trailer.
How do BOSKAR © Rock Flaps work?
When traveling, a very dynamic air vortex form between your offroad vehicle and trailer. If your tow vehicle has tyres with an aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain thread, it will pick up, and through the rear wheels’ rotational centrifugal forces, eject mud, rocks, debris and road tar upwards or outwards towards the rear of the vehicle. This debris, travelling at many kilometres per hour, is what is either flung directly against your towed trailer, or caught up within the air vortex and flung back against the rear of your tow vehicle.
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS serves as a flexible barrier to effectively and safely deflect mud, rocks, debris, and road tar from your tow vehicle and towed trailer.
The ejected road debris hits the tough, flexible rubber flap at around a 60° to 45° angle and is deflected downwards towards the ground, safely out of the way of your tow vehicle or towed trailer – instead of striking it directly and potentially causing damage. Rocks and road debris now bounce along harmlessly along the underside of the towed trailer.
How do you install BOSKAR © Rock Flaps?
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS are an adjustable and removable rock and mud protection system that can be easily installed or removed.
The central mount bar is bolted to the existing towbar of your vehicle, either using the existing towbar ball mount’s bolts and nuts, or any additional mount holes available on the vehicle’s drop plate. The flap arms are then fixed onto the central mount bar and secured via locking pins. The flaps can be easily and rapidly removed or reattached as required while the central mount bar remains fixed on the towbar – conveniently out of the way when you are not towing or doing off-roading – until the protection of the flaps are required again.
No drilling required. Only the once-off fixing of two bolts and nuts.
If the vehicle’s existing 7-pin trailer wiring socket is obscured by the flap arm, then use the option of a central mount bar with built-in and raised 7-pin trailer wiring socket and Brad Harrison power socket. In this event, the wiring may need to be extended once-off from the existing socket to the new socket on the central mount bar.
The existing towing functions and capabilities of the vehicle is not altered, and access to the rear of the vehicle is also not inhibited.
The BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS do not need to be adjusted when changing from one trailer to another, and it can be swapped from tow vehicle to tow vehicle as required.
Important however, for best level of protection, the BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS need to hang between 5cm and 10cm off the ground when the vehicle of fully loaded or the trailer hitched on.
How do you use BOSKAR © Rock Flaps?
Install BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS, and then drive or tow. As simple as that.
The flap arm lock pin holes are specifically positioned to ensure the flaps’ top protrudes 45° angle away from the rear of the vehicle while the rest of the flaps hang down vertically. As the vehicle travels, the flap will form a natural angle away from the vehicle due to wind pushing through under the vehicle.
The flap is then perfectly positioned to catch and deflect rocks and road debris flung from under the vehicle’s rear tyres.
If the vehicle needs to travel or break through extremely dense bush or brush, remove the flaps to ensure they are not bent by any bush or brush righting up again up from underneath the rear of the vehicle as soon as the vehicle passes over it.
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS should be removed for automated or machine-based drive-through car washes.
What are BOSKAR © Rock Flaps made of?
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS are made of A-Grade mild steel which has a lower carbon content, and which has ‘malleable’ rather than ‘shear’ tensile strength. The allows the Rock Flaps central mount bar to bend, exactly along its compression edges, in the event of bumping into rocks, trees, or other obstacles. The bending of the central mount bar prevents the destructive buckling or breaking of the central mount bar or the flap arms. The central mount bar can then simply be pushed back into its correct position through forceful body pressure. This extends the usable lifetime of the Rock Flaps rather than requiring a new central mount bar or flap arms.
The ultimate tensile strength of all the metal parts is 330 MPa.
All the metal parts are fully treated with an anti-rust primer to neutralise and prevent the formation of rust; the metal then is further coated with an alkyd pigmented solvent-based enamel. The enamel is a hard wearing with water resistance and will survive long term exposure and use in all weather conditions.
Depending on the selected BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS model, the flap is made from either 4mm or 8mm thick polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which has an incredibly durable thermoplastic characteristics, high dynamic efficiency, and has high resistance to corrosive substances. It can withstand oils, chemicals, as well as open flames, and has very high break strength. The rubber compound is combined with a layer of tear-resistant nylon fabric.
How do you look after your BOSKAR © Rock Flaps?
BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS are easy to maintain.
The rubber rock flap is flexible and extremely durable. It is also easy to clean. Simply hose it off with a garden hose or power washer, and for persistent dirt, use soap and water.
All the parts are replaceable if either worn or damaged.
No matter what the weather or road conditions, BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS do not need to be removed off the vehicle. They will not get clogged up with sand or mud or get weighted down and lose its ability to protect against road debris.
To extend the life of your BOSKAR © ROCK FLAPS, simply clean any dirt or salt off the flaps and metal parts, and spray with any commercially available lubricant on any exposed metal part to protect against corrosion. Wipe off any excess lubricant to prevent dust from sticking to the lubricant.
Make sure the plastic endcaps on the flap arms and central mount bar are always in place to ensure water does not enter the piping. If the plastic endcaps are lost due to abrasive bush, brush, or 4×4 travelling, simply replace the plastic endcaps.
